Tainan City, commonly known as Tainan, is a municipality of the Republic of China and one of the six capitals of Taiwan. It is located in southwestern Taiwan. It faces the Taiwan Strait to the west, the Alishan Mountains to the east, Chiayi County to the north, and Kaohsiung City to the south. With an area of 2,191.65 square kilometers, it is the city with the largest proportion of plain areas and the flattest terrain among all counties and cities in Taiwan, and the largest area of agricultural land in Taiwan. The terraces are staggered, the highways and roads are the most in Taiwan, the cultural heritage of the city is full, and the multiple cultures coexist. The city has a registered population of 1.87 million, and its government seats are located in Anping District and Xinying District, adopting a dual municipal center model, and the most populous district is Yongkang District. It is the cultural, academic, educational, and technological center of southern Taiwan, including the National Library, Academia Sinica, Industrial Technology Research Institute, Science Park, and the southern part of National Chiao Tung University are all located in Tainan.
